This model the K-52 has been beautifully restored with new flamed maple neck binding and new frosted head. the Kay company was never known as high end instruments, but has gained a lot of attention because of their unique and unusual designs that over time have become sought after by players and collectors alike. This one sounds amazingly clear and present without harshness. It features a Mahogany wood construction with armrest and white rim bindings as well as butter bean style tuners. This banjo is in good condition with only minor mark and dings on the rim and pot as would be expected from its age but it has no structural damage. There are however, a number of scratches and marks on the back of the resonator. The action is comfortable and needs no work done on it at this time. It's in really good playing shape and cosmetically well preserved with all of its bindings intact and only a few minor marks to the lovely Walnut resonator and the expected minor tarnish to metal parts that occurs naturally over time. The neck is straight and the action is low and comfortable and set for bluegrass. Most bluegrass banjos sport frosted heads but this one had a Fiberskyn head and we liked the sound so we left it. The head has one wear mark from picks but it is only cosmetic and remains sound and taught. The instrument appears to be all original and comes in a nice black hard case that may be its original. If you are ready for some great bluegrass tone and a really easy playing neck, you'll find that here.

Art Gariepy and his son made banjos out of Long Beach California from the mid 1960s to about 1970 and they were sought after because they were known for good tone at an affordable price. His aluminum pots were used for his long neck instruments competing with Ode etc. The aluminum cast construction of the pot and tailpiece identify this as a Gariepy pot, but we believe it started its life with a different neck, perhaps a tenor neck, and then had the current 5-string neck added later. The Gariepy name was likely on the original headstock and then someone hand etched the name into the aluminum pot when the neck was changed to keep an identifier on the instrument. It is in good playing condition with appropriate action and a magnificent clear tone. Other features include comfortable wooden armrest and vintage style offset planetary tuners. This banjo has great clarity and volume and would be good for a folk player or a bluegrass player who wishes to stand out without bearing the weight of a traditional metal flange and resonator.
